An excellent little Tapas bar in Studio City, between Coldwater and Woodman Ave with valet parking. The decor is deep red with paintings of bull fights on the walls, and the tables are nice and cosy, with some huge booths as well. My mom and I met an old family friend, and were going to see the amazing Christmas lights off of Winetka, so we tried to find someplace open on December 26th, and the place we looked at was closed, but my mom and I had tried this place, so we tried it, and it was excellent. In fact they have great drinks, and the Tapas was fantastic. I would certainly eat here again. Next time with my lovely fiancee though.

El Torito Grill, Mexican food, Sherman Oaks, CA

El Torito Grill

GOOGLE MAP

We went to this chain restaurant on Christmas night because we were going to go see a movie at the new Arclight at the Sherman Oaks Galleria, and honestly this was the only place open, and thus even had a 45 minute wait to get a seat (actually it was longer because they lost a whole list of people they had put down, and started taking people who came after us, so the service was fairly mediocre). And this was a chain Mexican restaurant, so the food was of course only mediocre at best. It sounded interesting, but was not all that impressive. In fact it was a little strange, and I would only eat here again if it was the only place open.

The earliest still standing Bob's in the country, and one that still has it's 50's look, and even has 50's style drive up one night a week. The place is always packed, and there is usually a wait, but it is cheap. The burgers are OK, but again are not juicy, but fried, so not that great, just decent, as are the fries.

A delicious and great steak house, but still way, way overpriced. There were 3 of us, and we had 2 bottles of wine and it was over $450 dollars. Sure it was good, but that is some damn expensive steak. Sure they have good service, and I love how they bring the food out and show you (including a live lobster) before you are given the menu.

I didn't realize this was an international chain restaurant, but to me it seems a pale imitation of the Alcove Cafe, with interesting looking food, small portions and an overall disappointing experience. The menu made it sound wonderful, but Kelly and I were so disappointed and the portions so small, that we went to Johnny Rockets afterwards.

A decent fast food burger place set up as a 50's diner (though started in the 80's) and even including a nickel juke box at every table with a whole slew of 50's music. Sure the burger is a bit dry, but it is tasty, and you get to put on your own ketchup.

There are 3 of these restaurants, but I have only been to this one on Sunset, and it has amazing food and inexpensive and huge margaritas. This place is a must, as it is very inexpensive and has top notch food. The decor looks like Tijuana chic, but it fits, as does the traditional Mexican music. Often there is also a mariachi that comes around. I want to try this place with a bigger party, because the food portions are huge, and delicious. I highly recommend it. And it always fun to see someone making tortillas fresh in front of you.

My friend Jeff Briggs and I had lunch this week in Burbank, and we went to this new Cheesesteak chain that has recently opened in Burbank. And it was delicious. This is in a little strip mall with not much parking, and around 1 PM on a weekday, the place was absolutely packed, I mean the line went out the door. Not only that, but 2 motorcycles pulled up, and it was Jay Leno going to have lunch! Ha, must be good cheesesteak.

Located in Hollywood, in fact right on my block next to Birds, the parking can be a bitch, though they have valet. This is a good medium prices Italian restaurant. The food tends to be heavy and covered in oil, but the food is tasty (too much oil on the pizza for my taste, but it tastes good) and the bread sticks are absolutely amazing, and a must try, though you must know that you will taste only garlic for the rest of the night, and even into the morning. This is some serious garlic.

Fatburger The Last Great Hamburger Stand, Hamburgers, CA

Fatburger

Well, unfortunately I won't be having any Fatburgers again any time soon, or anything but salads and veggies, as I am now almost 50 pounds overweight, youch, but this was a pretty damn good way to kick start me into a diet. I have always enjoyed Fatburger, sure they aren't juicy burgers, as they are on the griddle, but with all the toppings, they still seam juicy, and I love the addition of the choice of thin or fat fries. These are damn good fast burgers, and the Kingburger is just plain impressive. Still it cost over 10 for a Kingburger, fat fries and a large soda.

Kelly and I wouldn't even have known this place if we didn't go with Tara and Rick. It is a cool looking place, built in the old 1920's firehouse for the era, with hardwood floors, and craftsman light fixtures, and covered in photos celebrating the old history of Hollywood. Parking is non-existant, so pay for the parking, which is just North of it on Rowena. Their is a cool outside patio with heaters, and a huge bar, which is where the firetruck used to park, and is quite loud. And their is a smoking patio in the back, where the restrooms are. The main entrance is huge, and has a couple of chairs to wait, and check out all the old photos, they are very cool. The food and service was decent, but not great for the price. I have certainly had better, though the atmosphere was nice.

Right in the heart of downtown Burbank, and right by the AMC theaters, Kelly and I have eaten here before and kind of enjoyed it, but this experience I must say was pretty terrible, and I do not think we will be returning. The service was fine, but the food was pretty mediocre, and the breadsticks were tastless and awful, even with the oil at ever table, and even once we got a bottle of balsamic vinegar. I do like that they give you a pitcher of iced tea though. That is nice, but the food was only OK.

Kelly and I decided to get a nice meal in Burbank, which isn't always an easy task, as Burbank seems to have more fast food than it does good food, but right near her house are 2 places that are both expensive and good, both Morton's and right next door to it French 75. You have to park valet, for $5.50 (youch), but the place is really amazing. It looks straight out of Moulon Rouge. The bar is amazing, and the whole place is dark with red velvet and old French posters around the place. Our waiter was a bit strange, but the food was pretty great, and the people next to us got a chocolate soufflé which we quickly ordered, so we could get it after the meal. Wow.

Amazingly we went back not a month later. I signed up for their mailing list and got a $25 gift certificate, so we went back. I had the same, but Kelly didn't.

The famous only on the West Coast fast food Hamburgers, has the shortest menu you will ever see in a burger joint, and they do make damn good burgers, though still fast food (IE thin and dry). Still they are pretty dan good, though don't come with ketchup on them (you must add it), but do have Coke and Dr. Pepper on fountain. And if you like milk shakes, there's are amazing with real ice cream. If you are an east coaster you must check this place out, though this one is not my favorite as different from the others the fries (which I always thought took some getting used to) are exceptionally dry and overcooked here, giving even more of a stale Cape Cod Potato Chips flavor. Decent burgers though.

Well worth a quick bite.

We were both expecting a restaurant, but when we went in we learned that the Market House is a city owned premises where various food places rent and have stands, and the Galway Bay was one of those stands, where you get your food and take it outside to sit at little tables around the building or stand up at bars around the inside in between the food stalls. We were a little put off, but decided to give it a try.

I have been reading about this place like crazy, with a huge write up in both Los Angeles Magazine and also FOOD AND WINE magazine, and had been dying to try out this bastion of beer and burgers, which has won tons of award and accolades all over the place. This is one of the hippest places in town, and the line outside, and lack of parking add to that image. The place has a ton of beers on tap, with many obscure beers, as the owner/chef is trying to make beer the new wine. The place is tiny too, and you literally have to wait like a hawk to try and get a seat as soon as people get up, and then sneak in, and then you must order from the bar, and they will bring the food to your (though you get your drinks at the bar).

Now I really wanted to love this place, but I have to say I was a bit disappointed.

I have wanted to go to Thomas Keller's the French Laundry since I saw Anthony Bordaine go there on his old Food Network show, A COOK'S TOUR, and started learning that this was the number one restaurant in the US, and when I went to NAPA, I ended up going to the number 3 restaurant the BISTRO JEANTY instead and loved it. And then again it was Anthony Bordaine who showed me about Bouchon Las Vegas, but this time on his travel channel show, NO RESERVATIONS. And on the plane ride to Vegas to go to NAB this year I was reading Anthony Bordain's book THE NASTY BITS, which had the article that he was writing about Bouchon when he did the show, and I knew my girlfriend and I had to go. We called at 3 in the afternoon (they are not open for lunch) and got reservations for 9:30 PM. And I recommend you get there early and ask for directions, because the restaurant is quite well hidden away in the new tower, but it is quite nice inside.

Kelly and I got there a few minutes early, and got a table outside in the courtyard next to a fountain. It was a bit overly windy, but quite warm, and an amazing setting. The place is gorgeous. And when you sit down, the menu is a piece of paper wrapped around your napkin, so you can keep it. The wait staff was very good and helpful, and the food was honestly some of the best I have ever had. And the price was quite reasonable. With 1000Ml of wine, and an order of Oysters the dinner for the 2 of us was just under $150 with tip. Quite reasonable for food of this quality. If you are ever in or near vegas, YOU MUST GO TO THIS RESTAURANT NO MATTER WHAT! IT IS AMAZING!!!! Now I have to try THE FRENCH LAUNDRY!!!!

Marlborough Sauvingon Blanc 2002, Oyster Bay New Zealand, Wine

Berger 2005 Gr

The second bottle we picked up at our new wine store was an Austrian wine, since Kelly's sister Chelsea is a lover of Austrian wine from her trip to Europe. We were told this was similar to savignon blanc, which is a personal favorite, though I found it nothing of the sort. It seemed to have much more cabernet characteristics. I enjoyed it, but was hoping for more fruit flavor. Interestingly this comes in a 1 liter bottle.

This was the first we tried. I have had the Sofia 2004 while in Napa at the Coppola winery and it was my favorite of his wines, so I thought we should try the 2005, and I was not at all disappointed. This is an excellent sparkling wine, and well worth tasting.

Certainly can't be considered real greek food with the instant rice, and substandard pita bread, but still not that bad in a rush, if only because of the yogurt sauce. This is an OK fast food place, that is probably at least a little healthier than your local burger joint. And this one is at the new best buy/target mall, so if you are looking for a quick bite it won't kill you.

Nothing I would recommend, but not bad if you really want Mexican food. Actually we wanted to go to another restaurant nearby, but it was packed so we went to the bigger and less packed restaurant. The margaritas were OK and so was the food.

A decent enough mishmash of a restaurant. Really not a pizza place, but a Fusion restaurant, will all sorts of different Pizza like products. Reasonable priced with huge portions, though not the best food. Decent enough for a chain, but not too impressive, but certainly good enough for a quick bite.

I had never been here, and went for dinner after work with my girlfriend, and must say I was actually fairly impressed. The steak was quite tasty and cooked exactly as I asked. Sure I was too stuffed afterwards, but this place is worth a try, because for steak it is pretty reasonably priced.

This arcade and restaurant is in the Santa Anita mall in Arcadia, and is quite fun, but the restaurant is not worth eating at. The menu for both food and all the mixed drinks seemed great, and sounded tasty, but that did not prove to be the case. The service was awful, having to repeat things to the waiter repeatedly, and it took way too damn long. Not only that, but the food was absolutely horrible, and it seemed to have sat out for way too long. In fact this was the least I have ever tipped for dinner because the service and food were so bad.

I had wanted to try this place for some time, but I realize I should have gotten the chicken which Kelly so enjoyed, or the Fish which Chelsea enjoyed, as I did not enjoy the beef I had very much at all. The food is inexpensive and with huge portions, and you get delicious sides. Their is also parking in the back. I will try this place again, but I do not recommend the beef.

My girlfriend took me out to lunch to this amazing Taco stand right in the middle of downtown Burbank. It is a taco stand, but has indoor seating inside a sealed tent (we were lucky enough to be able to hear the rain falling on the roof which gave quite an ambiance). There is also outdoor seating for sunny days and ample parking. The menu is traditional mexican fare, and everything I had was fantastic. This is some excellent food.

Located in the same block as the AMC Burbank 16 Theaters, this is an alright Italian Chain restaurant. It's best thing is it's house wines, which you get a bottle of on the table and it is an honor system, and you get very large normal (non-wine) glasses. The food is nothing too great, but is not that bad either.

Who would ever have thought Chicken and waffles could be so good. This is the ultimate southern food place in Los Angeles. The line outside is always insanely long for this predominately African American restaurant which also have other locations in LA. The food is not exactly healthy, but it is certainly good, though the orange juice is way too small for the price.
